Erkoreka, Gabriel

Gabriel Erkoreka was born in Bilbao, Spain in 1969. He studied with Carmelo Bernaola and Juan Cordero at the Bilbao and Vitoria Conservatoires where he graduated with honors in composition, piano and chamber music. In 1995 he entered the Royal Academy of Music to study on the postgraduate course in composition with Michael Finnissy where he obtained the DipRAM and a Masters degree with distinction form the University of London, and was appointed the Mosco Carner Fellow of Composition 1997-98. He has also participated in courses and masterclasses given by Ligeti, Berio, Donatoni, Birtwistle, and Luis de Pablo.

His work has been performed in the Festival de Música del Siglo XX in Bilbao; Musikaste in Rentería; Festival Internacional de Alicante; Centro de Arte Reina Sofía; Fundación Juan March and Auditorio Nacional in Madrid; Warwick and Leamington Music Festival; the Donatoni Festival at the Royal Academy of Music; the ISCM World Music Days 1998 in Manchester; the Toru Takemitsu Award Festival 1999 in Tokyo; and in other cities such as Paris, Amsterdam and Berlin.

He has won several composition competitions and received various prizes for his works including the First Prize of the Premio SGAE (1996) in Madrid, prizes at the Royal Academy of Music (1995-97) including the Josiah Parker Prize, and the Prize of the Basque Government (1999). He has been selected by the Radio Nacional de España (RNE) to participate in the International Rostrum of Composers of the UNESCO in Paris, and for the International Gaudeamus Music Week 1998.

His music has been recorded and broadcast by the RNE, BBC, and other radio stations from various countries including Australia, Argentina, Italy, and Hungary; some of his works are available on CD, edited by LIM records and the Fundación Autor. He has received commissions from various institutions including the INAEM, the Nieuw Ensemble, the Quincena Musical, the Bilbao Symphony Orchestra, and the Royal Academy of Music.

As a pianist, he studied with Albert Nieto and Christopher Elton, and attended masterclasses with Joaquin Achucarro, Salomon Mikowsky, Elza Kolodin and Malcolm Frager. He has given concerts as a soloist, chamber music player and accompanist in venues which include the Sociedad Filarmonica de Bilbao, Centro de Arte Reina Sofia in Madrid, Teatro Guridi in Vitoria, Duke's Hall and Instituto Cervantes in London. In April 1998, he played the Ravel 'Concerto in G' with the Bilbao Symphony Orchestra.
