Not for Profit. All for Education.

As a not-for-profit higher education publisher, Oxford University Press USA is uniquely situated to offer the highest quality scholarship at the best possible prices.

  • Over 500 years. Still the same name. »
    • For more than 500 years, Oxford University Press, the world's largest university press, has published work that furthers Oxford's objective of excellence in research, scholarship, and education. While other publishers have undergone mergers and frequent name changes, we are proud to bring you consistency you can count on.
  • Quality scholarship, in both research and teaching. »
    • You know us as a publisher grounded in Pulitzer Prize-winning writing, quality scholarship, and incisive research, but did you know that we have built upon this foundation to produce high-quality textbooks as well? Oxford's U.S. Higher Education Group continues the mission of excellence, tradition, and innovation by publishing textbooks in key disciplines that span the curriculum (see full listing below).

Long before a new book publishes, our commitment to education begins with a thorough review process and the involvement of an Oxford University Press Delegate.

Each academic discipline is assigned at least one Delegate, who:

      • Is a leading scholar in his or her field
      • Thoroughly and meticulously reviews each textbook proposal to qualify the academic merits and contribution to the discipline
      • Helps to shape and refine each book
  • Why are OUP prices so much lower than our competitors'? »
    • Unlike a for-profit publisher, we don't need to inflate our prices to please a group of shareholders on Wall Street. For-profit publishers are under pressure to reach a certain profit margin; our aim isn't to maximize profits but to fulfill our mission. We are in a position to offer high-quality textbooks at a much more reasonable price than many of our competitors. We understand your students' concerns about the price of textbooks. On average, an Oxford University Press textbook is 20% less expensive in the United States than comparable books from commercial publishers. We invite you to compare the price and quality of our books to other books you may be considering for your course.

Not only do our prices start lower, but you can trust us not to drastically raise our prices each year like many of our competitors do. In recent years, we have increased our textbook prices an average of 2% each year; many of our competitors, on the other hand, have increased their textbook prices an average of 8-10% each year, and, in some disciplines, as high as 25% each year.*

*Prices researched from publishers' websites or calculated from wholesale prices provided by publishers from January 2010 to January 2011.

  • Where does our surplus go? »
    • At Oxford, we don't publish in order to generate revenue, we generate revenue in order to publish…and to support the University's wider educational mission. We know you can't put a price on a great education. But we can put a price on a textbook.

In addition, we contribute some of the surplus we generate back to education. Over the years, Oxford University Press has funded hundreds of yearly scholarships that make a University of Oxford education possible for U.S. students who could not otherwise afford it. Also, surplus generated by Oxford University Press USA funds educational publishing, including academic monographs and important reference works, including the world-famous Oxford English Dictionary.

  • Why should you consider an Oxford University Press textbook? »
