Oxford University Press believes that high quality educational support can and should be delivered at a reasonable price.
You know us as a publisher grounded in Pulitzer Prize-winning writing, quality scholarship, and incisive research, but did you know that we have built upon this foundation to produce high quality textbooks as well? Oxford's U.S. Higher Education Group continues the mission of excellence, tradition, and innovation by publishing textbooks in key disciplines that span the curriculum (see full listing below).
Long before a new book publishes, our commitment to education begins with a thorough review process and the involvement of an Oxford University Press Delegate.
Each academic discipline is assigned at least one Delegate, who:
Unlike a for-profit publisher, we don't need to inflate our prices to please a group of shareholders on Wall Street. For-profit publishers are under pressure to reach a certain profit margin; our aim isn't to maximize profits but to fulfill our mission. We are in a unique position to offer high quality textbooks at a much more reasonable price than many of our competitors. On average, in the United States, an Oxford University Press textbook is 20% less expensive than competing books in the same market. Not only do our prices start low, but you can trust us not to drastically raise our prices each year like many of our competitors do. In recent years, we have increased our textbook prices an average of 2% each year; many of our competitors, on the other hand, have increased their textbook prices an average of 8-10% each year, and, in some disciplines, as high as 25% each year.*
We know you can't put a price on a great education. But we can put a price on a textbook. We are determined to bring you high-quality educational resources at a reasonable price.
*Prices researched from publisher's websites or calculated from wholesale prices provided by publishers from October 2008 to October 2009.
At Oxford, we don't publish in order to generate revenue, we generate revenue in order to publish…and to support the University's wider educational mission.
Through the years, Oxford University Press has funded hundreds of yearly scholarships that make a University of Oxford education possible for students who could not otherwise afford it. Thanks to these scholarships, hundreds of world-class scholars from more than 40 countries have studied at Oxford University, including many from the United States. In addition, surplus generated by Oxford University Press in the U.S. funds educational publishing, including academic monographs, reference books, and many other important scholarly works, such as the Oxford English Dictionary.
Oxford University Press USA, as a not-for-profit company, is uniquely situated to offer the highest quality scholarship at the lowest possible prices. Consider an Oxford USA. textbook and we promise you:
Although we might not always have the textbook that is the perfect fit for your course, we hope that you will always consider Oxford University Press first for your textbook needs.
