Born on 24 June 1918, M. Attiqur Rahman went to school in England and then joined the Indian Military Academy, Dehra Dun, where he was commissioned in 1940 and joined the Frontier Force Regiment where he saw action in Burma and was awarded the Military Cross. At Independence, he joined the Pakistan Army as Chief Instructor at the Military Academy, Kakul, after which he was given command of his own regiment. During Yahya Khan's martial law, he was appointed Martial Law Administrator and Governor of West Pakistan. After the break-up of one unit, he took over as Governor of Punjab. He retired from the army and as governor in 1971. In 1977, General Ziaul Haq appointed him Chairman, Federal Public Services Commission. He died in June 1996.
