Gabriel Jackson appointed as BBC Singers’ new Associate Composer

OUP is pleased to announce that Gabriel Jackson has just begun his new role as the BBC Singers’ new Associate Composer. Jackson is the third composer to take up the position, following in the footsteps of Judith Bingham, who has held the post since 2005, and Edward Cowie, who became the first BBC Singers Associate Composer in 2002.

Gabriel Jackson

Gabriel Jackson already has a strong relationship with the BBC Singers, who have been performing his music for over a decade. His first commission for the group was Cecilia Virgo which it premiered in Canterbury Cathedral in October 2000.

His first commission for the BBC Singers in his new role will be a piece for choir and 2 organs to be performed in St Giles Cripplegate on 21st January and will be simultaneously broadcast on Radio 3.

Michael Emery the BBC Singers Producer says:
"I'm delighted that Gabriel is to be our next Associate Composer. He's a composer with a huge sympathy for and expertise in vocal music, and I really look forward to seeing what choral wizardry he'll create for the BBC Singers over the next three years."

Gabriel Jackson says: "I am thrilled and honoured to be invited to be the next Associate Composer to the BBC Singers. I have always thoroughly enjoyed working with the Singers in the past and look forward to deepening that relationship and to exploring the rich musical possibilities our collaboration will offer. I know we can do some very exciting work together."

Not no faceless angel CD

Gabriel’s choral works can be heard on a Hyperion cd recorded by Polyphony conducted by Stephen Layton: Not No Faceless Angel (CDA67708)

Review: 'There are many striking features of this ravishing disc, beautifully and imaginatively performed by Stephen Layton and Polyphony … Jackson possesses an instinct for acoustic and vocal texture, but the beauty and sheer appeal of his vocal works, challenging as they are, are sculpted by an energising pragmatism open both to the professional and ambitious amateur choir' (Gramophone)

Notes for Editors

BBC Singers is the UK's only full-time professional chamber choir and one of the BBC’s six Performing Groups. Their concerts are broadcast on BBC Radio 3 and David Hill is their Chief Conductor.
