Marc21 records now available for many Oxford University Press Online Products

Oxford University Press is pleased to announce from February 2010 the MARC records for many of its products will be generated by Bibliographic Data Services. MARC21 records are now available for all titles in these online products and downloadable for the entire collection or on a module by module basis. For all future updates, all MARC records will be in MARC21 format.

Improved MARC 21 are now available on the following OUP online products.

  • Oxford Reference Online (ORO)
  • Oxford Digital Reference Shelf (DRS)
  • Oxford Scholarship Online (OSO)
  • Oxford Handbooks Online (OHO)
  • Oxford Medical Handbooks Online (OMHO).
  • They will be added in the next few months to Oxford Islamic Studies Online (OISO), Oxford Biblical Studies Online (OBSO), Oxford Art Online (OAO), Oxford Music Online (OMO), African American Studies Centre (AASC), and Oxford Language Dictionaries Online (OLDO).

John McManus, Online Project Manager in OUP's Electronic Product Development department, explains. “As librarians and students are turning to the digital form of a work, there is still a need to have an accurate catalogue record for the item in an institution’s catalogue. OUP’s aim was to have a catalogue record available for every digital publication and to ensure that the user of that catalogue can travel seamlessly from such a record to the online resource itself. MARC is key to this. We are confident that the MARC21 records will meet the standards required by librarians. We are, of course, also open to suggestions on ways to further improve our MARC service.”

OUP will now ensure that MARC21 records are available for all of its book-based online products in time for their online release.

Our MARC records are all catalogued to ‘full’ level according to AACR2 guidelines. They are compliant with NACO and SACO, and relevant LoC guidelines for eBooks and updating databases, and contain LoC and Dewey call numbers, in MARC21 format with MARC8 character encoding.
