Zhu Rongji Meets the Press
Zhu Rongji
The first collection of Premier Zhu’s talks and interviews with reporters from around the globe
Zhu Rongji, arguably one of the most recognizable, worldly, and potent Chinese figures to emerge on the international scene in recent times, was first Vice Premier (1993 to 1998) and then Premier of China from March 1998 to March of 2003.
This book presents for the first time his conversations with journalists and talks to foreign business, diplomatic and academic circles, from New York to Istanbul, and Manila to Moscow.
His encounters with other world figures such as U.S President Bill Clinton, media leaders such as Peter Kann, publishers of The Wall Street Journal, and respected journalists such as Jim Lehrer of PBS, are faithfully recorded here.
Zhu Rongji meets the press also records his frank discussions with BusinessWeek, CNN, The Irish Times, Japan’s NHK, Germany’s Handelblatt, and many others.
Collectively, the conversations capture the wise array of international and domestic challenges that China was facing in the late 1990s and into the new century.
“The interviews offer a rich record of Zhu’s work during a period in which he served as both a leading economic official in China’s domestic reforms and, in effect, as a diplomat charged with explaining and building support for China’s policies abroad. On both counts these interviews portrait an official of rare skill: witty, urbane, exceptionally intelligent, tough in the face of challenge, and at times disarmingly frank.” - Henry A. Kissinger
