UN High Commissioner for Human Rights, Geneva
The website for the High Commissioner provides the main human rights news of the time with a section devoted to 'issues in focus'. There is an emphasis on the treaty bodies and a database containing detailed information on each body is provided. Human rights treaties are available and in some cases the status of ratification.
UN HQ, New York
This is a general website with information on all of the functions of the UN including human rights. Within the human rights section, the research guide is of particular interest as it provides brief summaries of each treaty body whilst containing links to the more detailed High Commissioner website.
ILO, Geneva
This website is of particular use due to the featured sites Ilolex and Applis which both give the ratification status of the labour conventions by country or convention. The site itself also contains labour related news and featured articles on topical areas of concern.
ICJ, The Hague
This website contains very useful general information on the origin, role and jurisdiction of the International Court of Justice. Decisions of the court can be viewed most effectively in summary form.
UN Treaty data base (subscription service)
This database includes the United Nations Treaty Series and the League of Nations Treaty Series. Of particular use is the section labelled 'Status of Multilateral Treaties deposited with the Secretary General'. This section can be used as a searchable index or in alphabetical form. Human rights occupy chapter IV.
General human rights website including UN treaty bodies
This website contains the texts of human rights treaties and human rights news. It has a new section on how to complain about human rights violations which details the exact process involved.
UN Division for the Advancement of Women
This website contains detailed information on the Convention on the Elimination of All Forms of Discrimination against Women including up to date ratification information.
ICTY
This website provides useful background information to the International Criminal Tribunal for Yugoslavia. It lists the objectives of the tribunal as well as providing information on its origin, role and jurisdiction.
ICTR
The main areas of interest within this website are to be found under general information and within the facts sheets. In particular it is interesting to read about the achievements of the tribunal and international cooperation with the tribunal.
University of Minnesota, Human Rights Library
This website is for human rights documents. Treaty texts are available and some also contain ratification information. There are also useful links to other human rights websites.
UNICEF
This website provides basic background knowledge to the children's fund. It explains what UNICEF does and why, whilst also providing information on specific countries and problems related to children.
ICC (pre December 2003)
This website contains a useful overview of the need for a criminal court which includes quotations from eminent human rights figures. It provides a link to the UN ratification information on the Rome Statute of the court. It only contains information up to December 2003.
ICC (after December 2003)
This provides information on the history of the court and its relationship with the UN. It also gives information on the state parties.
UNESCO
This website is useful for brief background information on UNESCO and its history. It also has information on the states which are members of UNESCO.
Official Documents of the UN
This web site contains a search engine for all types of official UN documentation from 1993; older UN documents are added to the system on a daily basis. It also provides access to Resolutions of the GA, S.C., E.C.O.S.O.C. and Trusteeship Council from 1946 onwards.
Netherlands Institute of Human Rights Documentation Centre (SIM)
Under the library section of this web site, details of ratifications of international and regional human rights treaties are available; under case law, details of the jurisprudence of all UN human rights treaty bodies, including 'general comments' may be found.
