Chapter 7

Gough Map points

Download a zip file containing all files for this case study.

The locations of places in England shown on the Gough Map are given by gmeng.shp, which can opened directly in ArcMap™. The locations are also given in gmeng.csv which can be imported into ArcMap™ and opened in other packages. The outline of Britain (for context) is given in gball.shp. The local point pattern intensity can be computed using the ArcGIS™ Spatial Analyst Density option.

Synthetic data

Download a zip file containing all files for this case study.

The ‘clustered’ points are provided in the file ppclus.dbf and the ‘dispersed’ points are provided in the file ppreg.dbf. As above, the local event intensity can be computed with the ArcGIS Spatial Analyst Density option. The L function can be computed using the Crimestat software (www.icpsr.umich.edu/CRIMESTAT/). The files ppclus.dbf and ppreg.dbf can be opened directly in Crimestat. In Crimestat III, the .dbf file is opened in the Data Setup > Primary file window. X should be set to X-COORD and Y to Y-COORD. In the same window, the projection system should be set as Projected (Euclidean) and the data units as metres. Under the Measurement Parameters section the area of 6665.744 square units should be specified and the area units should be set as square metres. The L function is computed in the Spatial Description > Distance Analysis I window. As before, the unit should be specified as metres.
