Example kite diagram

The chart below is a dummy kite diagram for barnacles (Balanus) and mussels (Mytilus) generated using the Merlin software package as an add-in to Excel.

The maximum width for each 'track' within the kite diagram is 25 units- this corresponds to the maximum 25% cover recorded for each of the two species.

Note how the species presence is recorded around an invisible central axis to produce a series of kite-like shapes which show species fading in and out along the transect.
