Aims

To assess the likely scale and nature of change to the coastal plain of Languedoc in southern France with rising sea levels.

At the end of this exercise, you will be asked to provide a report or presentation setting out the change you anticipate, your justification for making this selection, and their ecological significance. You may also be asked to offer measures that might mitigate the larger impacts.

There is no right answer. A good effort will fully justify its conclusions and perhaps evaluate which changes are:

  1. Most likely
  2. Most damaging
  3. Likely to occur soonest

Try to provide an evaluation of the ecological value of the region, and the scale of threats that it faces. The amount of time and the range of the assessment may be specified by your tutor. Using the resources (videos, photographs and maps) available here, the exercise could be completed in 1- 2 hours. A much larger and more extensive review would be possible if some of the external resources are used.

Remember that your remit extends beyond the ecological - you are asked to anticipate social and economic change in this landscape as well.
