Guided tour of web sites in genomics

What the student of genomics will need to find on the web are sites that provide:

  1. access to data and annotations
  2. specialized information retrieval systems permitting identification of data relevant to the student's interest
  3. tools with which to analyze the data

Several major web sites collect complete archives of sequence data in the public domain. They curate and annotate the data, and make it available. They are equipped both with information-retrieval and analytic tools. The goal is to provide sites for 'one-stop shopping' for all one's genomics needs.

These sites are data oriented. Other, more specialized, sites aim at specific scientific communities, such as scientists studying Drosophila or mouse. These sites provide information of interest to scientists in those fields, such as lists of upcoming meetings.

Links to the key web sites along with descriptions of the sites are available below, grouped under the following headings:

The major genomics web sites
Partially specialized genomic information
Human Genome Project
Genome sequencing projects
Databases of proteins sequences and structures
