Fulcher and Scott: Sociology 3e

Chapter 02

Intute

http://www.intute.ac.uk/socialsciences/

This is a new website to replace ‘SOSIG’, the old social science information gateway. Intute contains a search engine that helps you to locate resources such as articles and research papers on the key thinkers, bibliographic databases and journals. These can help you to conduct a literature search for essays and dissertations. There is also information about upcoming conferences and events related to sociology, mailing lists and organizations you can contact, and departments in colleges and universities across the UK.

Theory…

http://www.theory.org.uk

An entertaining introduction to contemporary social theory, with trading cards, action figures and Lego sociologists! Written by David Gauntlett at the University of Leeds, this is a very accessible site that shows you the basics of some of the more innovative and unconventional theories. It focuses on popular culture and is very user-friendly.

SocioSite, University of Amsterdam

http://www.sociosite.net/topics/sociologists.php

A great page that lists a number of famous sociologists and their main ideas, including excerpts to read from the original texts. This would be helpful if you are researching into the work of one particular sociologist in detail and want to look at their writing first hand.

Social Theory Pages

http://newton.uor.edu/FacultyFolder/Spickard/SocialTheory/links.htm

A very helpful page of links to websites about the key thinkers, prepared by Jim Spickard at the University of Redlands. The links direct you to resources on both classic and contemporary theory, as well as to some other 'mega-sites' like the SocioWeb and SocioSite.

Social Theory mailing list

http://www.jiscmail.ac.uk/lists/SOCIAL-THEORY.html

A discussion list about social theory, which allows you either to participate in threads of conversation or browse the archives for information. This is useful if you are interested in a particular strand of sociological theory and want to exchange ideas with others who share your enthusiasm!

Sociological Theory journal

http://www.jstor.org/journals/07352751.html

This page provides online access to Sociological Theory, one of the most well respected academic journals in this field. You can browse the contents list of the current issue, or search the archives for articles about a particular theoretical perspective. As this is an international journal, it will give you a sense of how the various theories are regarded in different countries.
