Case study 10

The potential uses for GM crops within global environmental issues

George W Bush has moved the USA toward the use of sustainable, carbon neutral bio-fuels but with what consequences? You are to write a report on the political, economic and social consequences of this move for an independent think-tank that is interested in developing GM strategies for dealing with the great problems of the twenty first century such as global warming, land and water shortages and population growth.

The report should also consider one of the following:

  1. The use of GM crops to increase the yield of biofuel biomass for the farmers of the USA.

  2. The use of GM strategies to create plants that can be grown in areas suffering pressures on land usage due to natural pollutants such as arsenic.

  3. The use of GM strategies to develop plants for use in areas suffering shortages of fresh water.
