Detection of contamination maize with GM seed
You are employed by the GM inspectorate of The Central Science Laboratory. Information has been received that suggests a seed company has been importing maize seeds contaminated with genetically modified maize seeds (containing an ampicillin resistance marker and a Bt toxin gene) and selling these seeds to farmers in the UK.
Describe the role of CLS in regulating GM crops in the UK and indicate what other agencies have roles in the process. In your report also indicate what approach you would use to test the seeds for transgenes and give some estimate of how many seeds need to be tested. Finally give some indication as to the potential hazards the release of these GM plants may have.
