Welcome to the additional material that supports Research Methods for the Biosciences. The material is based on the chapters in the book; each chapter generally has the same format:
- Interactive exercises - for each chapter we have provided a number of interactive exercises that relate to the topics in the chapter and link across topics from several chapters. We explain at the beginning of each exercise which topics are covered so you can decide if this is an area you wish to work on. Most of these exercises use ideas from our own students' studies, and we would like to acknowledge the hard work of Bruce Bostock, Caroline Brevitt, Ian Childs, Adrian Culling, Cecilia Dean, Catherine Duchak, Simon Handley and Susan Watt. In some chapters we include useful web links that can help you find more information on the topic. In each chapter we have highlighted the words that can be found in the glossary.
- Full calculations - where there are calculations included in boxes in the book we provide, where needed, all the steps in the calculation.
- Statistical software walk-throughs - we also show you, where it is straightforward, how to use Excel, SPSS and Minitab to carry out these calculations. We would like to thank Minitab for providing us with their software (version 14 for Windows). We have also used Excel 2000 and SPSS 11.5 for Windows. To help you, we have provided brief general introductions to these three commercial statistical software packages.
