Chapter 25
The mass media and politics
Politics on Demand
www.politicsondemand.co.uk/
Podcasting (the episodic delivery of audio or video via the internet) is a relatively new media phenomenon. Here you are able to download a growing number of podcasts by representatives of all shades of political opinion in the UK.
The Guardian: Politics
politics.guardian.co.uk/
The Guardian newspaper's website section on Politics is comprehensive, and unlike many of its competitors does not require registration or payment to access archival stories. There is a wealth of material here, including podcasts of interviews and Prime Minister's Questions. Perhaps the best resource on the site however, is the special reports section where you can explore the majority of the issues covered by this textbook in exhaustive depth.
British Journalism Review
www.bjr.org.uk/index.htm
The British Journalism Review is a quarterly magazine which examines print and broadcast journalism in the UK. Not only will you find excerpts from the latest print issue on the site but there is an archive of past editions going back to 1999 which contains many full text versions of older articles. In most issues you will find something of interest on the relationship between politics and the media in the UK.
Campaign for Press and Broadcasting Freedom
www.cpbf.org.uk/
The Campaign for Press and Broadcasting Freedom is an organisation which campaigns on a broader range of issues than its name would suggest including government media policy, journalistic ethics, war reporting and public service broadcasting. You can find news, statements and links on all these and other issues relating to press and broadcasting freedom in the UK.
The DA Notice Committee
www.dnotice.org.uk/
DA Notices, are issued by a joint committee of government and media representatives in a system dating to 1912. DA Notices represent guidance to the media when reporting matters relating to British defence and counter-terrorist policy and activity, providing recommendations (without legal sanction) on what not to publish. The website provides information on the system, articles and speeches relating to the committee's activity as well as the five standing DA notices.
