Chapter 24

The judiciary and rights

Judiciary of England and Wales
www.judiciary.gov.uk/
These web pages provide you with a range of information about the judiciary in England and Wales. Here you can find out more about the role of the judiciary, study statistics on the judicial system in the UK and read publications. A useful section of the site is the learning resources where you can watch a video interview of the Lord Chief Justice and take an online test of your understanding of the judiciary.

Liberty
www.liberty-human-rights.org.uk/
Originally known as the National Council for Civil Liberties, Liberty campaigns for the protection of civil and human rights in the UK. The press section of the website provides access to press releases issued by the organisation since 2000 but it is the issues section of the site which is likely to prove most useful to you. There you can find briefings on a wide range of issues including terrorism, ID cards, rights to privacy and protest, police powers and the Human Rights Act.

Your Rights: The Liberty Guide to Human Rights
www.yourrights.org.uk/index.shtml
A dedicated site, established by Liberty, which provides an accessible means of finding further information on the provisions the Human Rights Act of 1998. There is an overview provided of the act, but the main value of the site is the areas dealing with the rights provided by the act. You can explore provisions including those on privacy, the rights of suspects, defendants and prisoners and the rights of free expression and protest.

No2id
www.no2id.net/
The No2id campaign was formed to oppose the national identity card and National Identity Register. Although the National Identity Cards Act of 2006 is now on the statute books, you can still review the arguments made against identity cards and follow the progress of the implementation of the government's proposals from this site. Also worth looking at are the movies to be found in the 'Resources' section. Here you will find Tony Blair, David Blunkett and Sir Ian Blair in their own version of the Wizard of Oz!

The Parliamentary and Health Service Ombudsman
www.ombudsman.org.uk/
The Parliamentary and Health Service Ombudsman is the successor to the Parliamentary Commissioner for Administration established in 1967. The Parliamentary Ombudsman can carry out investigations into complaints about government departments, agencies and some public bodies. Here you can find further details about the office and its powers, reports made to Parliament and links to other ombudsmen in the UK political system.
