Chapter 10
A physical property of heavy water
Because of the significant mass difference between protium and deuterium, the physical properties of so-called heavy water differs from those of ‘normal’ water. Here we show that an ice cube of heavy water sinks in a beaker of normal water as the density of solid deuterium oxide is greater than that of both solid and liquid protium oxide.
