References from the book:
Aday, R.H. (2003) Aging Prisoners: Crisis in American Corrections. Westport CT: Praeger.
This is an excellent introduction to the profile of older offenders in US prisons. It provides a comprehensive view of the needs of offenders in later life, and recommends policy initiatives to address this growing population.
Biggs, S. (1993) Understanding Ageing—Images, Attitudes and Professional Practice. Buckingham: Open University Press.
Simon Biggs examines theoretical approaches to understanding old age. His book provides new insights into how older age is imagined, defined, and experienced. By studying self-perception, communication, and power relations, and applying his conclusions to the helping professions, institutions, and community care, Biggs offers a new framework for constructive social gerontology and reflexive praxis.
Bond, J., Coleman, P., and Peace, S. (eds) (1993) Ageing in Society—An Introduction to Social Gerontology. London: Sage.
This book provides a comprehensive coverage of gerontological issues while capturing the complexity inherent in the processes of ageing. The book emphasizes diversity in the experience of ageing as a function of cultural, social, racial/ethnic, and individual variability.
Rothman, M.B., Dunlop, B.D., and Entzel, P. (2000) Elders, Crime and the Criminal Justice System. New York: Springer.
The Rothman et al. collection is the only book that provides an international perspective on ageing offenders. This edited book examines the relationship between old age and crime and the criminal justice system.
Wahidin, A. (2004) Older Women in the Criminal Justice System: Running out of Time. London: Jessica Kingsley.
This book introduces the reader to key debates and issues surrounding the needs of the older prison population in England and Wales. In particular, this book is based on a national study of older women and their experiences of imprisonment. The author uses her recent work on older men in prisons and the management of the older prison population in the US and the UK to highlight implications for older offenders.
Wahidin, A. and Cain M. (eds) (2006) Age, Crime and Society. Cullompton: Willan Press.
The starting point of this book is that ‘age’ is under-theorized and viewed as unproblematic in criminology. There is very little material on ‘elder’ or later life crime, little on the victimization of elders except in relation to the presumptively irrational nature of their fears. The book examines some of the issues and concerns in the field of elder abuse and neglect and argues the case that Criminology as a discipline must address issues of ageing and its complex relationship with crime. This book is the first comprehensive text to tackle these issues.
