Meneely: Advanced Genetic Analysis
Review article by Dolinski and Botstein
Chapter 4, December 2008
A review article by Dolinski and Botstein greatly expands the mention of the Homologene database on page 156 to describe eight other databases compiling orthologous proteins across species. The article provides an excellent discussion of the challenges and benefits of comparing genes across species, with many examples. It also discusses the use of inter-species complementation tests for gene function and the conservation of protein interaction networks. Table 3 in the article is a compilation of nearly 350 proteins from yeast that are conserved in humans and other species, with a brief description of the biological function that involves the protein. Nearly every important cellular function is represented. This review is highly recommended both for its depth and readability.
