Take a product that you think is in each of the phases of the industry life-cycle model (you may want to use the examples we give in the book: for example, fuel cells for the introductory phase, RFID tags for the growth stage, PCs for the mature phase, and VCRs for the decline phase. Use your library databases if you have access to any, such as Factiva, Emerald, or Business Source Complete, or any internet search engine, or the websites of business publications such as:

From these sources as far as possible calculate the total sales in the industry over the previous five years (or another period of time if you believe that this would be inappropriate) identify the number of firms in the industry, their differentiation and/or pricing strategies, the competitive forces in the industry, the number of new entrants and exits in the previous year, and the name and size of the dominant player(s). From these data, make an evaluation of what the industry is likely to be like in three years time.
