Brayne & Carr: Law for Social Workers 10e

Chapter 6

The Laming Report on the Victoria Climbié Inquiry is available on www.dh.gov.uk - it is a report which repays careful reading.

You will find responses from various organizations on their respective web sites to the Laming Report and to the Children Act 2004 - for instance, BASW on www.basw.co.uk and the Local Government Association on www.lga.gov.uk.

You should read as many of these responses as you can. You can learn a great deal about the role of organizations, and their relationship with the social worker, as well as understanding their strategic perspective on the protection of children.

The Guardian web site www.guardian.co.uk/society/children has a wide selection of articles on social issues and agencies and an archive of reports on Victoria Climbié. It is particularly helpful on the Children Act 2004 and contains a wealth of information including a timeline of child protection initiatives.

You can find an example of a Children and Young Person's Strategic Plan on Bromley Council's web site www.bromley.gov.uk. The site also provides copies of the Annual Review of the plan.
