Brayne & Carr: Law for Social Workers 10e

Chapter 1

The legal system

If you would like to read more about the English and Welsh legal system there are a number of books available. We enjoyed Martin Partington’s Introduction to the English Legal System (4th edn., Oxford University Press, 2008). It is written in a very accessible style and covers all the institutions we have discussed in this chapter.

Reading law

For more information on finding and reading cases and statutes we recommend J. Holland and J. Webb, Learning Legal Rules (6th edn., Oxford University Press, 2006). Again this is a very user-friendly text which provides a great deal of support to anyone new to reading law. The role of the local government ombudsman is considered in J. White, ‘Social Welfare and Family Law Issues and the Local Government Ombudsmen for England’ (2007) 29(1) J of Social Welfare & Family Law 77–86 (March).
