Wetherly and Otter: The Business Environment
Chapter 14
The gradual expansion of large scale retailers, such as Wal-Mart in the United States, has led to accusations that the influence of such shopping outlets continues to be seriously detrimental to the traditional make up of the US retail sector. Similar accusations have been levelled at UK supermarket chains such as Tesco, Asda (a subsidiary company of Wal-Mart) and Sainsbury’s. What kind of initiatives can be taken to ensure the long term survival of small scale traditional high street retailers in the face of competition from large scale supermarket chains?
