Wetherly and Otter: The Business Environment

Chapter 11

The process of donations by individual or collective business organisation to political parties in order to gain influence over policy initiatives is by no means a recent phenomenon. However, in recent years, the scepticism associated with this practice has increased throughout the general public in the UK. Obviously political parties require funding for their survival, but many have argued that political donations serve to enforce political biasness towards the rich and reinforce social divides. Recently, the Labour Party has come under fire for accepting substantial donations from property developer David Abrahams which it later tried to conceal. Do you agree that political biasness towards business is detrimental and if so how would you reform the process of private business donations?
