In the UK, Private Finance Initiatives (PFIs) have become an increasingly popular means of improving overall efficiency within the public sector. One of the British government’s main initiatives under PFI is the Building Schools for the Future (BSF) programme, in which private companies compete for contracts to pay for school refurbishments and / or rebuilding costs. The school the repays the private firm for the initial work via a long term contract of up to 25 years. What are the main benefits and drawbacks associated with this initiative?
