An excellent introduction to theories of consciousness is given by Van Gulick (2004). A comprehensive list of possibilities is covered, with pros and cons of each position, organized along several dimensions such as what, why and how. A new handbook of useful and relevant articles is also now available (Velmans and Schneider, 2006).
