General content questions

The Guided Tour will give you a good introduction to how this site works, so you may want to watch this before referring to this list of questions.

What is LPC Accounts Online?

LPC Accounts Online is an innovative online resource which features over 85 interactive exercises, spanning both solicitors' and business accounts. A short text accompanying the resource equips the reader with a sound knowledge of basic accounting principles, while the interactive online exercises, with accompanying feedback, offer a unique opportunity for the reader to put their knowledge into practice.

What is available online?

The website is clearly divided into two distinct parts, Solicitors' Accounts and Business Accounts, and contains 13 sections covering the key accounting topics which must be covered on the Legal Practice Course. Each section contains audio and video components, alongside a variety of interactive exercises; some exercises may require you to answer multiple-choice questions, identify whether statements are true or false, or put different elements into the correct order to create a flowchart, while other exercises may require you to actively create a set of accounts. The website also features a Reflective Diary.

What is the Reflective Diary function?

LPC Accounts Online hosts a Reflective Diary which can be accessed at all times when you are logged into the site by clicking on the 'Reflective Diary' link on the top right hand side of your screen. The Reflective Diary is in the form of a Word document which contains a number of headings designed to encourage you to reflect on your learning as you work your way through the exercises on the site. Your Reflective Diary can be saved, and printed out, and you can therefore use it to feed into any personal development plan already in place at your institution. Please note that you cannot upload or save the file within the website.

For more information on this product, see About this site.

What is the relationship between the book and the website?

LPC Accounts Online is an online resource which is supported by a supplementary printed textbook. The accompanying textbook clearly outlines the essential accounting principles you should be aware of before attempting the online exercises. Worked examples are also included throughout, and illustrate how the principles introduced in the book should be applied to record accounting transactions in practice.

The textbook and the website are closely linked, and you will be directed to logon to the website at relevant points throughout the book to watch an animated demonstration or complete one or more of the interactive exercises.

Completing the exercises

I've logged in. How do I start the exercises?

Simply click on the name of the topic that you would like to begin. You will then be presented with a short video introduction from the author highlighting the key points to be covered in the section and their relevance to practice. Once you have watched this video, you may be presented with an animated demonstration which you should watch before moving on to Exercise 1. You can use the navigation panel on the left of your screen to move between the video introduction, animated demonstration and exercises. Alternatively, once you have viewed the author introduction or animated demonstration, click 'next exercise' to move on to Exercise 1.

Do I have to complete the exercises in order?

Yes, the exercises build up your knowledge as they proceed, and are designed to be completed in order. However, once you've completed an exercise, it will be 'unlocked' and you can come back to it at any time without having to complete the exercises that precede it. 'Unlocked' exercises will be clickable in the panel on the left of your screen.

What are the supplementary exercises?

For particular exercises within each topic area, the author has provided supplementary exercises to ensure that you develop an awareness of key issues before moving on. You will be automatically directed to these supplementary exercises if you score less than 50% in the preceding 'main' exercise. If you score over 50% you will be offered the opportunity to undertake these exercises. Supplementary exercises are easy to identify in the contents list on the left hand side of your screen: they are followed with an 'a' (for example, Exercise 1a).

Can I skip any exercises?

Yes, you can choose not to complete the supplementary exercises. To skip an exercise, simply click 'next exercise'. Alternatively, you can click on the following exercise in the navigation panel on the left of your screen.

Some of the exercises listed on the left hand side of the screen are not clickable. Why is this?

The exercises build up your knowledge as they proceed, and are designed to be completed in order. Once you've completed an exercise, it will be 'unlocked' and you can come back to it at any time without having to complete the exercises that precede it. Unlocked exercises will be clickable in the panel on the left hand side of the screen.

What do the symbols in the exercises mean?

A green tick means that you have got an answer correct; a red cross indicates that you've answered a question incorrectly.

Do I have to complete the whole exercise in one go?

No. You can save any answers you have entered by clicking on the 'save' button at the foot of your screen at any time. Next time you login you will be able to resume this exercise at the point at which you left it.

How do I know which exercises I have completed?

Your score will be indicated next to the exercise in the panel on the left hand side of your screen. Alternatively, you can look at the 'My Scores' page which will show the score for all exercises completed across all topic areas.

I've started to complete the exercises in one topic. Can I begin the exercises in a different topic at the same time?

Yes. You can go back to where you left off in any particular topic area by clicking on the name of the topic on the homepage.

I logged out after completing only some of the exercises in a topic. Does this mean I have to start the topic again?

No, you can go back to where you left off in any particular topic area by clicking on the name of the topic on the homepage.

Will my answers be lost if my computer crashes or if I log off halfway through an activity?

It depends. If you have clicked on 'save' or 'submit' during an activity then your answers will be saved and you will be able to see them the next time you login. If you haven't clicked on 'save' or 'submit' then your work will be lost.

Can I re-take an exercise once I have completed it?

Yes, you can re-take an exercise as many times as you want. Simply press the 'clear all' button to remove your previous answers.

Do I have to complete the topics in order?

No. You can choose to start any topic at any time. If you wish to start the exercises in a new topic simply click on the name of the topic you would like to begin listed in the panel on the left hand side of your screen. Alternatively, return to the home page by clicking 'home' and then click on the name of the topic you would like to begin.

How do I know which topics I have started?

The homepage will show you the status of each topic area indicating whether a particular topic is 'not yet started', 'underway' or 'completed'.

Can I see a summary of my results for the exercises I have completed?

Yes. You can click on 'My Scores', featured on the top right hand side of your screen, at any time to see your results for each of the exercises you have completed.

For exercises where I need to enter my own answers into blank boxes, should I use a particular format for dates (e.g. 1 January or Jan 1) or figures (e.g. £100 or £100.00)?

This resource uses the date format of 1 Jan, 2 Feb, so you are recommended to follow this pattern. You should enter figures using two decimal places (e.g. 100.00, or 150.50). There is no need to enter a £ sign. However, the site will recognise a limited number of other formats so you shouldn't be penalised if you enter a correct answer in a different format. Where you need to enter text in the 'Detail' column of your ledgers, the web site again will recognise a number of formats as correct. Please refer to the table in the front of your accompanying text book for more information on this.

How can I share my results with my lecturer?

You can either print out the relevant screen to show your lecturer or you can email her/him with your test scores. In order to do this, simply go to the 'My Scores' page and click on 'Email to Lecturer' button and fill in the form provided. Your results will be attached to the email automatically. Alternatively you can click on the 'export' feature. This will then create an .xls file which you can email to your lecturer from your own mailbox.

Can I print my answers?

Yes. If you want to keep a record of your answers or to print out important information for your file, click the 'print' button at the foot of your screen.
If you print ledger based exercises it is advised to print them in landscape orientation at 600 dpi print quality.

I have to scroll to see all of the exercise. How do I see more of it?

Check whether you have maximized the Browser window. In other words, does it fill your screen? If not, click the maximize button in the top right of the window. Check whether your display is at the recommended resolution for this website. The recommended resolution is 1024 x 768 pixels. If you have a lower resolution, you may need to scroll horizontally to see the whole exercise.

Can I change the size of the web browser window?

Yes. You can do this by maximising or amending the size of the window. You also need to reload the page once you change the size of the web browser so that the exercise can adjust to the new dimensions. If you are in the middle of doing an exercise remember to click 'Save' before you reload the page.

Can I change the size of the font?

Yes, you can resize the text to a comfortable reading by clicking AAA symbols displayed on the right hand side of the website, depending on which font size is most suitable for you.
