I. General content questions
What is Skills for Law Students?
Skills for Law Students covers all of the study skills and legal skills a student needs to develop during the course of his or her law degree. There are 32 chapters and each chapter deals with a separate skill. Each chapter contains two key elements:
The first is the 'text': an overview of what that skill is; why it is important; and what you need to do to develop it.
The second are the 'activities': interactive tests which enable you to understand the topic better; to put the skills into practice; and to self-study and receive immediate feedback on your progress.
What is the relationship between the book and the website?
Skills for Law Students is an online resource with an accompanying textbook. This means that all of the content is available online. If you prefer, you can simply use the book to activate your online account and you can access 100% of the content online.
The book contains all of the 'text' for each skill area, but does not contain the activities. If you prefer not to read large chunks of text on screen, or you find the book more convenient, you may choose to read the text in the book and then log on to the website to complete the activities. We flag up in the book when there is a relevant activity with a number of screenshots, so that you know where the activities occur and what they are.
How do I submit a comment or correction?
You may use the Contact us form to submit your comments. When providing a comment about a specific entry, please provide as much detail as possible and include the URL of the page being referred to by copying and pasting the URL from your browser's address box into your message. Comments will be reviewed by our editorial staff.
For more information on this product, see About this site.
II. Questions regarding the activities
Can I re-take an activity I have already completed?
Yes. Simply on the 'Clear' button and the activity will be reset, ready for you to take again. Your 'My Scores' page will then be updated with your new result.
Why do some activities not have scores?
Some activities are reflective activities where there is no right or wrong answer. In these cases, you are asked to record your thoughts in a box provided and when you click on the 'Authors' thoughts' button you can see whether your thoughts are on the same lines as the authors. It is important to realise that sometimes there is not a 'right' or 'wrong' way of doing something; rather, through reflection, practise, and experience you may come to develop your own way of approaching something and this is an important way of developing your skills.
Can I see a summary of my results?
Yes. You can click on the 'My Scores' link at any point to see your results.
How can I share my results with my lecturer?
You can either print out the relevant screen to show your lecturer or you can email her/him with your scores. In order to do this, simply go to the 'My Scores' page and click on 'Email to Lecturer' button and fill in the form provided. Your results will be attached to the email automatically. Alternatively you can click on the 'Export' feature. This will then create an .xls file which you can email to your lecturer from your own mailbox.
Will my answers be lost if my computer crashes or if I log off halfway through an activity?
It depends. If you have clicked on 'Save' or 'Submit' during an activity then your answers will be saved and you will be able to see them the next time you login. If you haven't clicked on 'Save' or 'Submit' then your work will be lost.
Do I have to complete the activities in order?
No. You can complete the activities in any order. Simply use the left-hand navigation bar to move from one topic to another and dip in and out of the text and activities as you wish!
Can I print my answers?
Yes. If you want to keep a record of your answers or to print out important information for your file, click the 'Print' button at the foot of the page.
