Five spies



Anthony Blunt 15 November marks the 30th anniversary of the exposure of Anthony Blunt as a former spy for the Soviet Union.
1909 also marks the centenary of two institutions, now best known as MI5 and MI6, responsible for anti-espionage activities in Britain and overseas—first led by Vernon Kell and Mansfield Cumming, the original C.


  • Anthony Blunt (1907-1983), a member of the Cambridge spy ring, Blunt worked simultaneously for MI5 and the NKVD. Blunt’s story is also available as a free biography podcast.

  • Melita Norwood (1912-2005), codename Hola, she disclosed British atomic research to the USSR.

  • Alan Nunn May (1911-2003), physicist who passed details of the Manhattan project to the Russians. May’s life is also available as a podcast.

  • Elizabeth Alkin (d.1655?), known as Parliament Joan, she spied against royalists during the civil war.

  • Sidney Reilly (1874–1925), the ‘Ace of Spies’, and an early member of Secret Intelligence Service (MI6), Reilly worked to overthrow the Bolsheviks.
