Five lunar lives

Tommy Gold On the 40th anniversary of NASA landing,
let us introduce you to five men (and women) of the Moon…

  • Tom Bacon (1904–1992), developer of the fuel cell that powered the rocket. ’Without you Tom,‘ said Richard Nixon, ‘we wouldn’t have gotten to the Moon’.

  • Mary Evershed (1867–1949), astronomer and compiler of Who’s Who on the Moon (1938)

  • Thomas Raikes (1777–1848), dandy, nicknamed Apollo ‘because he rose in the east and set in the west’.

  • Tommy Gold (1920–2004), astrophysicist, who questioned the safety of moondust

  • Frankie Vaughan (1928–1999), popular singer and the original ‘Mr Moonlight’
