To mark the film version of David Peace’s novel, The Damned United, we present the Oxford DNB’s biography of Brian Clough.
The film charts Clough’s brief and turbulent spell at Leeds United, after he replaced Don Revie as the club’s manager in 1974. Clough was given his first opportunity as a coach by the Sunderland manager George Hardwick after his playing career had been cut short by injury in the early 1960s.
As manager of three first division teams during the
1970s and 80s (Derby County, Leeds United, and
Nottingham Forest), Clough came up against other
legendary managers, including Liverpool’s Bill Shankly
and Bob Paisley, and players such as Emlyn Hughes.
In 1978 Clough followed Herbert Chapman as only the
second manager to win the first division championship with
two clubs (Derby County and Nottingham Forest).
