Born and raised in Belgium, An Vrombaut discovered her love for drawing and making her own little books very early on. Inspired by some of the great Belgian comics such as Tintin, she briefly considered a career in comics, but instead enrolled on an animation course at the Art Academy in Ghent, her hometown.

Following the course, she made two short animated films, Little Wolf, and When I grow up I want to be a Tiger!, both of which have been hugely successful at festivals all over the world. An then came up with an idea for a TV series, and it was while waiting for funding for this that she started working on her first picture book. Since then, she has published six picture books in the UK, most recently 'Smile Crocodile Smile', (shortlisted for the Nottingham Book Award 2004) and 'Lost Acorns', both published by Oxford University Press.
