Robert Swindells
Robert Swindells was born in Bradford in 1939. He enlisted in the RAF at seventeen
on a three year engagement, two of which he served in Germany. He then worked
as a clerk, engineer, and printer until 1969, when he entered college to train
as a teacher, having obtained five O levels at night-school. His first book
was published in 1972, and he began writing full time in 1980.
Brother in the Land was
first published in 1984 and won the Children's Book Award, The Other Award,
and was highly commended for The Carnegie Medal, which he won in 1994 for Stone
Cold. Robert's interests include being an active member of the Peace Movement,
keeping fit, travelling, and reading. He has now retired from visiting schools
to talk and read stories to children, and lives in Keighley in West Yorkshire.
