Diana Wynne Jones
Diana Wynne Jones' early childhood was disrupted by World War II. She was transported
first to Wales, then to the Lake District, where she lived in the house that
belonged to the children in Arthur Ransome's books, and then to a nunnery in
York.
She discovered she was going to be a writer at the age of eight. This was not
a decision: it was more as if someone tapped her on the shoulder and told her
so. After this, her family moved to Essex, and she started writing books to
read to her sisters. She studied English at Oxford, attending the lectures of
both C S Lewis and J R R Tolkien.

Since 1976 Diana Wynne Jones has lived in Bristol with her husband and three
