Supporting NLT

Oxford University Press and National Literacy Trust partnership

Oxford University Press are working with The National Literacy Trust to help teachers to engage parents in their child’s learning and to support parents by providing practical advice and support for helping with their child’s learning at home.

Together we have developed a whole host of activities, resources and support for literacy both at home and at school:

The Reading Miles Global Challenge

Map

Launched in January 2012 this exciting reading competition encourages children to collect points every time they read, be it at school or at home. The competition spans school and home and will encourage parents to support their child as they ‘read their way around the world.’ Fun, free resources are available to support teachers in running the challenge in school, and there are some fantastic prizes to be won. Schools can download or order the resources from the Reading Miles Global Challenge website.

How it works

Pupils are rewarded with 500 reading miles for every 10 minutes spent reading. They will collect these reading miles in their personal reading passport on their very own reading world tour - a whopping 33,000 miles (or 11 hours) in total!

The Prizes

Every pupil who completes their reading journey around the world will be entered into a prize draw to win some fantastic prizes including books for themselves and the school, a day of professional storytelling for their school from Snail Tales and a family day out.

Find out more about the competition and how your school can take part by visiting the Reading Miles Global Challenge website.
