Read Write Inc. Fresh Start
A proven synthetic phonics intervention programme
Read Write Inc. Fresh Start offers older primary and lower secondary children,
who have not made progress in their reading, a second chance to catch up and
become confident, fluent readers.
Who is it for?
It is designed for children in Y5-7 / P6-S1 who are working below
National Curriculum level 3. It can also be used by older children.
HIGHLIGHTS
- Children are taught the 44 sounds in English systematically as three sets of Speed Sounds in lively, fast-paced phonics lessons that help them crack the reading code. Once they have learnt a few sounds children quickly start to sound-blend them into words.
- When children can sound-blend they progress to the Modules.
- The Modules contain lively and age-appropriate stories and non-fiction texts which the children have the phonic knowledge to read, so they are assured of success in reading from the start.
- Comprehension questions in the Modules ensure children learn to understand what they read.
- Writing activities in the Modules build up spelling and writing skills step-by-step, progressing rapidly from words to simple sentences and on to guided compositions.

What are the core components?
- Speed Sounds Cards and Speed Sounds Interactive CD-ROM
- Speed Sounds Cards Sets 1, 2 and 3 introduce all 44 sounds and graphemes using simple picture prompts.
- Green and Red Word Cards, Complex Speed Sounds Poster, Sound-Picture Frieze - these resources support the teaching of sounds and graphemes and practise decodable and tricky words. Advice on when to use these alongside the Speed Sounds Cards is given in the Fresh Start Handbook.
- Modules - an Introductory Module provides decodable short texts for when children have learnt Speed Sounds Set 1. The remaining 33 Modules give clear progression and practice in reading and developing comprehension and writing skills. All texts have been specially written for this age group.
