• Q, When we install the Additional, and/or Additional Applied packs, the Core modules are 'greyed out'
This is a problem with certain computer setups and networks and is quite easy to fix. Using the Additional iPack, not the Additional Applied iPack, put the first disk into the machine and wait for the installation wizard to start. Once this starts go through the options selecting 'Modify' when asked for the installation type, the rest of the options can just be set to default. You will then go through a brief installation and the wizard will ask you to finish. Click finish and load up Twenty First Century Science, and hopefully the problem should have gone.

• Q. How do I install the Twenty First Century Science iPacks onto an RM CC3 network?*
A. Open the package builder on a clean machine, click on Build Package , and create the first screen shot. Install one or more iPacks (GCSE Science, GCSE Additional Science, and/or GCSE Additional Applied Science) depending on what you have purchased. Take the final snapshot and finish the package-building process. Allocate the packages to the workstations as normal, ensuring that you manually put the shortcut on the machines.

• Q, I am having problems loading IB1_17 - Kates Story
1. Download the following replacement file, noting where you save it. Download replacement IB1_17
2. Make sure that the iPack application is not running.
3. Unzip the file, which contains the video.
4. Navigate to the location on your network or hard drive where you installed Twenty First Century Science and open the folder :\Oxford University Press\Twenty First Century Science\content\science\b1\resources\video\
5. Copy and paste the downloaded file into this folder. You will be asked whether you wish to replace the existing IB1_10 file. Click 'yes'.
6. Close the folder and open the iPack application.

• Q, Why do some of the guidance files not open properly?
We believe this is to do with the version of Microsoft Word you have, and the way it handles metadata.


1. Download the following zip file, noting where you save it.
2. Make sure that the iPack application is not running.
3. Unzip the file, which contains the new Word files.
4. Navigate to the location on your network or hard drive where you installed Twenty First Century Science and open the folder :\Oxford University Press\Twenty First Century Science\content\science\p1\teacher\resources\word
5. Copy and paste the downloaded files into this folder. You will be asked whether you wish to replace the existing file(s). Click 'yes to all'.
6. Close the folder and open the iPack application.


The Word files should now open from their respective links.

• Q, Are MST files available to aid installation of the software to a CC3 network?
Yes, a number of possible configurations have been made available to download.

• Q, Is there a discrepancy on IB1_10 - Genetic Crosses? Should it not read "unattached" in the first paragraph instead of "attached"?
Yes, this is correct. A new updated file (along with instructions) is available to download below.

• Q, I am having problems when viewing the video files?
Reinstalling Quick Time will solve most problems.


1. Go to My Computer and then Control Panel
2. Go to add/remove programs
3. Remove any reference to Quick Time (it is possible to have more than one version installed)
4. Insert the third CD-ROM of Twenty First Century Science GCSE Science Ipack
5. Go to My Computer, right click on the CD-ROM and select "open" and then go into the "plugins" directory
6. Find the "QuickTimeInstaller" icon, run and follow the instructions on screen

• Q, I am still having problems with my videos!?
The only other cause for problems with video files tends to be the computer itself not actually being powerful enough, consult the technical specs and ensure you match the minimum. For a quick test:
1. Go into My Computer
2. Navigate to the Program File directory and then Oxford University Press
3. Then 21st Century Science
4. Find the "content" directory and then go into science
5. Pick any of the modules and go into resources
6. Open the videos directory (if you cant find the videos directory go back to the modules and pick another
7. Double click on any of the videos, if the video runs fine then there is something wrong with your web-browser (see * question), if it doesnt run then the computer must not meet minimum specirfication

• Q, I am trying to download Quick Time off the web but iTunes installs as well?
You can select to only download Quick Time, other wise
1. Insert the 3rd CD-ROM of 21st Century Science
2. Go to My Computer, right click on the CD-ROM and select "open" and then go into the "plugins" directory
3. Find the "QuickTimeInstaller" icon, run and follow the instructions on screen
 
• Q, When running Twenty First Century Science on a network only one person can use it at a time
1. On the server find the folder that you install Twenty First Century Science to
2. Find the files start_t.exe, start_t.htm, start_s.exe, start_s.htm, data_t.dxr, and data_s.dxr
3. Make all of these files read only
4. Shut down Twenty First Century Science on the computer that is running it
5. Now try and run on two machines and it should be fine

• Q, I am having problems opening some of the Powerpoint presentations
There are a few powerpoint presentations (add numbers here), that are designed for students to add things to, unfortunately when developing the program we found that the only way we could directly open the presentations from our program was to decide if they were going to be opened as read only or writeable, we settled with read-only. To open the files:
1. Go to the directory where Twenty First Century Science was installed (C:\Program Files\Oxford University Press\Twenty First Century Science\, if installed to default)
2. Go to the contents directory and then go into science
3. Pick the module with the presentation you would like to view and go into resources
4. Open the PP directoy, and find the Powerpoint presentation needed and load

• Q, When I click on spreadsheets or sound files nothing happens
This is quite an easy problem to fix
1. Go to the directory where Twenty First Century Science was installed (C:\Program Files\Oxford University Press\Twenty First Century Science\, if installed to default)
2. Go to the contents directory and then go into science
3. Download the following file here
4. Extract the files over the ones in the science directory

• Q, I am having problems using IP4_9 "Forces" animation?
A new updated file (along with instructions) is available to download below.


1. Download the following replacement file, noting where you save the it.
2. Make sure that the iPack application is not running.
3. Unzip the file, which contains the animation.
4. Navigate to the location on your network or hard drive where you installed Twenty First Century Science and open the folder :\Oxford University Press\Twenty First Century Science\content\additonal-science\P4\resources\anims\
5. Copy and paste or drag and drop the downloaded file into this folder. You will be asked whether you wish to replace the existing IB1_10 file. Click "yes".
6. Close the folder and open the iPack application.
