Adèle Geras spent her early childhood in many different countries including Nigeria, North Borneo and the Gambia. She began writing when she entered a competition in the Times. Although she didn't win, and wasn't even a runner-up, she found writing her story so pleasant that she resolved to continue.

She is often inspired to write by places she sees, wondering about what might be going on in a spooky-looking house, or what sort of people live in a particularly interesting spot. She has published over eighty books and her novel Troy was Highly Commended for the Carnegie Medal. She lives in Manchester, has a beautiful tabby cat called Mimi and enjoys knitting like Filomena in the Fantora books. Sadly, though, she can't foretell the future.
