Oxford University Press Southern African Branch

Oxford University Press Southern Africa was the fifth OUP International Branch to be established, opening in Cape Town in 1915 and publishing its first local title, South African Short Stories, in 1947. (This title remained in print for 50 years.) OUP SA is now one of the larger publishers, with a South African staff of 75, and sales offices in Johannesburg, Durban, East London, and Pietersburg. It is also responsible for the territories of Botswana, Lesotho, Swaziland, and Namibia, and has agents in two of these countries, as well as Zimbabwe. In addition to developing a South African publishing programme, it markets, sells and distributes the publications of other OUP offices around the world. Academics are published locally, or in Oxford or New York, and can be referred from one publishing centre to another. Books are imported from around the group, and knowledge and expertise are shared.

A South African dictionary programme began in 1978 with the publication of the popular Dictionary of South African English, and has been followed by other monolingual and bilingual dictionaries. July 1996 saw the publication of the important scholarly work, The Dictionary of South African English on Historical Principles, which gives a comprehensive history of the meanings, orthography and usage of those words which are unique to the English spoken by South Africans of all communities.

Today, OUP Southern Africa has approximately 1242 South African titles in print in all 11 official languages, written by more than 651 South Africans, with an annual publishing programme of 120 carefully selected titles in the academic, educational and general fields. In addition to its reputation as a leading academic publisher, OUP Southern Africa is also known for its exceptionally high quality school books for South African schools. Publishing innovative and exciting material for second language learners, OUP Southern Africa draws on its international experience and expertise to develop relevant material for local needs and interests, ensuring that the same standards of excellence are applied to the educational field as to the academic field.
