The Kuala Lumpur office of OUP was established in 1957 with a staff of three. The first book to bear an OUP imprint appeared three years later—a Malay translation of Shamus Fraser's The Crocodile Dies Twice. Publishing activity grew quickly and in 1969 Penerbit Fajar Bakti (PFB) Malaysia was formed, initially to take over responsibility for Malay publishing but assuming full responsibility for the Press activity in Malaysia in 1986. Approximately three quarters of PFB's turnover comes from local publications, mostly for the education market.
